Just over a week since airing its series finale, ABC’s “The Middle” could be resurrected sooner than you think, albeit in spinoff form. The network is said to be in active negotiations with Warner Bros. Television in developing a continuation of the series with original series co-star Eden Sher (Sue Heck) toplining.

While a full concept has yet to be determined, “Middle” creators/executive producers Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline are expected to head up the potential series, with a pilot possibly able to film as early as October. If picked up to series, the spinoff could become part of ABC’s midseason lineup, or be considered for the 2019-2020 season. Deals for Sher, Heisler and Heline are still being finalized between WBTV and ABC.

It’s understood that a spinoff of “The Middle” had been actively considered by the network for some time, and is not the result of the network’s decision yesterday to cancel “Roseanne.”

“The Middle” ran for nine seasons on ABC and helped spearhead both the network’s Wednesday and Tuesday comedy blocks, respectively, during most of its run.

In the final episode, Sue and Sean Donahue (played by Beau Wirick) finally reveal how much they feel for each other and decide to start dating after he returns from his three-month trip to Ghana. Later, in a flashforward, it’s revealed the two got together and broke up several times over before finally tying the knot and walking down the aisle, officially making the Hecks part of the Donahue clan.

Below is a clip of how Sue’s storyline concluded during the show’s finale.
