In case you were wondering how the networks and the shows stacked up when nominees for the 41st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were announced this morning, Soap Opera Network has you covered! As previously reported, CBS leads the pack with 61 nominations overall with “The Young and the Restless” in particular leading all shows with 26 nominations. But, how do the other networks and shows stack up?

ABC’s “General Hospital” continues to pace for its best season since the 2006/2007 television season as the series hit four week highs in Women 18-34 (254,000/0.8 rating – tied in rating) and was the #2 program in Women 18-49 (776,000/1.2 rating) and Women 25-54 (1.05 million/1.7 rating). The soap attracted its largest single episode audience in over 6 years in total viewers on Tuesday, January 7 as 3.55 million viewers tuned into the happenings going on in Port Charles. The last time the audience for a single episode was that high was November 12, 2007.
According to a rep for Disney/ABC, as “General Hospital,” “The View” and “The Chew” weren’t already in the Hulu Plus system prior to the WATCH ABC rule changes, their launch on the service was delayed as a result. It was not fan complaints that prompted their availability as originally reported.
Earlier today, we reported on changes affecting those viewers who use WATCH ABC to view their favorite ABC programming. In our report, we noted that in order to view the network’s shows online or On Demand, viewers would only be able access programming within one week of air if they are a current subscriber to participating TV service providers. This change goes into effect on Monday, January 6. Not in our report was how this change would directly effect ABC Daytime’s “The View,” “The Chew” and “General Hospital.”
On Tuesday, December 31, 2013, Disney/ABC touted its reigning champ WABC-TV as New York’s most watched station in 2013 and the number one station in the country. While highlighting the success of “Live with Kelly and Michael,” November’s “The ING New York City Marathon,” “The View,” “The Chew,” its Eyewitness News broadcasts, and ABC’s strong primetime schedule, the company neglected to note the success of its sole remaining daytime soap opera, “General Hospital,” on the station.
After nearly 14 years on the air, SOAPnet ended its broadcast run at the stroke of midnight with the final 2013 episode of ABC’s “General Hospital” (originally aired on Monday, December 30) taking it out in style.
Although it had long been rumored, Disney/ABC Domestic Television made it official today that it has canceled “Katie,” the daytime talker hosted by Katie Couric. “While production will continue on ‘Katie’ through June 2014, we’ve mutually agreed that there will not be a third season of the show,” the company and Couric’s team said in a joint statement. “We’re very proud of everyone’s contributions to making ‘Katie’ the #1 new syndicated talk show of 2012-2013, and we look forward to the rest of the season.”
For the week of December 9-13, 2013, ABC’s “General Hospital” continued to pace for its best season in seven years in total viewers (since 2006/2007 television season), and is turning in its best performance in the key women sales demos in 2 1/2 to 4 years. The soap was number 1 in Women 18-49 for the second consecutive week (779,000/1.2 rating), which is the first back to back win the soap has had in the demo in six-and-a-half years (since week of 5/21/07). “GH” turned in its 2nd-most-watched week in over two years in Women 18-49 and in over two and a half years in Women 25-54 (1.06 million/1.7 rating), behind only last week and since weeks of 8/15/11 and 3/21/11, respectively. Moreover, the past three weeks have been the show’s Top 3 most-watched weeks in nearly three years in Total Viewers – since week of 12/27/10. Additionally, “GH” posted the largest year-to-year increases of any broadcast daytime drama in Women 18-49 (+28% – 779,000 vs. 610,000) and Women 25-54 (+37% – 1.06 million vs. 774,000).
For the week of December 2-6, 2013, ABC’s “General Hospital” continued its ratings momentum from the week prior (week of November 25, 2013) with 3.31 million viewers, a 1.9 rating in Women 25-54 (1.18 million in actuals) and a 1.4 rating in Women 18-49 (880,000 million in actuals), per Nielsen Media Research Live + SD ratings data. This week marked the first time “GH” ranked a solid #1 in Women 25-54 in over six years and its best performance in Women 18-34 and Women 18-49, both since the week of July 16, 2007. The soap attracted its largest numbers since the week of January 21, 2008 in viewers, it’s largest Women 18-49 rating in over two-and-a-half years (since week of March 11, 2011) and best performance in Women 25-54 rating in close to three years (since week of December 27, 2010), respectively. The soap continues to pace for its best season in seven years in total viewers (since 2006/2007 television season).
During the week of November 25 through 29, 2013, ABC’s “General Hospital” reached its largest audience in nearly six years (since week of January 21, 2008), when 3.3 million viewers tuned into the happenings of Port Charles. The soap is currently pacing for its best season in seven years in total viewers (since the 2006-2007 television season). In addition to an increase in viewers, the daytime sap reached an over 2-and-a-half-year high in Women 25-54 (1.04 million/1.7 rating) and an over 2-year high in Women 18-49 (774,000/1.2 rating) – since weeks of 3/21/11 and 8/15/11, respectively – to rank a strong #2 for the week in the key female sales demos.
On Monday, September 26, 2011, ABC premiered a new daytime talk show that brought food back to the table and into our everyday lives. Now in its third season, “The Chew” is currently enjoying one of its highest rated on record in both total viewers and key women sales demos. As the talk show celebrated its 500th episode yesterday, fans of the ABC version of “All My Children” continued to mourn the loss of their favorite daytime soap opera, which made Susan Lucci and her character Erica Kane a household name to mainstream viewers.
In celebration of its “Home for the Holidays” campaign, ABC announced today plans to incorporate United States Veterans in upcoming episodes of its daytime and primetime programming, including “Modern Family,” “Last Man Standing” and “General Hospital.” Comedy “The Neighbors” will offer a veteran the opportunity to shadow one of their directors as they put an episode together. Meanwhile, “The View” and “The Chew” will support the vets with various themed episodes throughout the holiday season.
The alphabet network is very proud of its sole remaining daytime drama series, “General Hospital,” which has increased its total audience and is surging in the key sales demos. The network is also proud of daytime talkers “The View” and “The Chew,” which are both achieving increased audiences in demos. “Chew” is also reaching a new zenith in total audience as the talk show attracted its largest total viewer count and women 25-54 demo count in its history.
On Wednesday, October 23, “General Hospital’s” Jason Thompson (Patrick Drake) will be giving ABC’s “The View” a male perspective on the day’s hot topics as the daytime star is scheduled to co-host the chatfest alongside Sherri Shepherd, Jenny McCarthy and Whoopi Goldberg. The Canadian born actor will also be chatting it up with the stars of ABC’s “The Middle” as the cast celebrates the show’s 100th episode airing that night.
Earlier today CBS released a promo touting its daytime lineup for “Bringing Sexy Back,” and not to be outdone, ABC has released its own daytime lineup promo. With the phrases, “Why just live when you can love. Why just smile when you can laugh. Why just watch when you can feel,” viewers of “The View,” “The Chew” and “General Hospital” are all embraced by the ABC Television Network.

Quartermaine (Sean Kanan) will make the ol’ battle of the sexes debate seem rather blaze when they whip out their spoons and have an epic battle of… brace yourselves… condiments! Yep, that’s right: The onscreen aunt and nephew are taking their rivalry to the next level, starting when Tracy learns that A.J. has been booked on “The Chew” to showcase his Pickle-Lila recipe. Today, April 1, ABC’s “General Hospital” celebrates its 50th anniversary in style! Before the anniversary episode airs (note: due to a national network preemption on Wednesday, March 13, this episode was originally scheduled to air on Friday, March 29; the Tuesday, April 2 episode was the episode previously scheduled to air as the anniversary episode on Monday, April 1) fans of the soaps most recognizable couple can watch “The View” for Anthony Geary (Luke Spencer) or “The Chew” for Genie Francis (Laura Spencer).
ABC’s “General Hospital” and “The View” ranked #1 in Women 18-34 for the week of January 21-25, 2013. Both series averaged a 0.7 rating in the key sales demo. This marks “GH’s” 10th time in the past 11 weeks to rank #1 in the demo.
According to a report by NBC New York and Gothamist.com, a staff member of ABC’s “The Chew” was murdered on Thursday, January 10 after being shot in the stomach near Macon Street and Throop Avenue in the Bed Stuy section of Brooklyn. Identified as Ivan Giovanettina, 41, the prop supervisor for the daytime talk show was taken to Kings County Hospital and pronounced dead. A recording of the suspected shooters was posted on YouTube in hopes of someone being able to help identify the perpetrators. The recording took place a few blocks away at Tompkins Avenue and Halsey Street. An arrest has yet to be made.
