Daytime television’s number one drama series for more than 30 years, “The Young and the Restless” is celebrating its 48th birthday today.

Revolutionizing the daytime genre when it premiered on March 26, 1973, “Y&R” continues to set the standard with strong characters, socially conscious storylines and epic romances.

In a video released by CBS to honor the show’s anniversary, series stars Eric Braeden (Victor Newman), Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki Newman), Peter Bergman (Jack Abbott) and Christel Khalil (Lily Winters) thanked the fans for 48 years of drama and more than 12,000 episodes, particularly through “all the romances, heartbreak, joy, tears, deception and intrigue” as noted by Scott. “Mark my words, the best is yet to come,” chimed in Braeden.

Throughout the years, the soap has won 11 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series, winning 162 Daytime Emmys overall in all categories it was eligible.

Created by the late William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell, “Y&R” is produced by Bell Dramatic Serial Company in association with Sony Pictures Television, Anthony Morina is the show’s executive producer. The co-executive producer and head writer is Josh Griffith.
