It’s been nearly sixteen years since John Stamos was a series regular on a Disney-owned TV project, last appearing in the short-lived single-camera comedy “Jake in Progress” for ABC from 2005-2006, but beginning Friday, April 16 the actor can be seen leading the cast of “Big Shot,” a new original series coming to Disney+.
The series follows Stamos in the role of Marvyn Korn, a hotheaded NCAA men’s basketball coach who must take a job at an all-girls high school. He soon learns that teenage girls are more than just X’s and O’s; they require empathy and vulnerability — foreign concepts for the stoic Coach Korn. By learning how to connect with his players, however, Marvyn starts to grow into the person he’s always hoped to be. The girls learn to take themselves more seriously, finding their footing both on and off the court.
The cast also includes Jessalyn Gilsig, Richard Robichaux, Sophia Mitri Schloss, Nell Verlaque, Tiana Le, Monique Green, Tisha Custodio, Cricket Wampler and Yvette Nicole Brown.
“I play a hot-headed coach who gets kicked out of the NCAA and as part of his road to redemption, is forced to coach at an all-girls private high school in Laguna. How’s that for a logline? I love this show. Hope you will too,” wrote Stamos on Twitter following the announcement of the show’s premiere date earlier this week during the Disney+ portion of the Television Critics Association’s virtual press conference.
Co-created and co-executive produced by David E. Kelley (“Big Sky,” “The Undoing”), the 10-episode series will release weekly on Disney+ beginning Friday, April 16. ABC Signature is the studio behind the project.
Making his television debut on “General Hospital” as Blackie Parrish from 1982-1984, Stamos is probably best known for his portrayal of Jesse Katsopolis on ABC’s “Full House” (1987-1995) and its continuation series “Fuller House” (2016-2020), which aired on Netflix. He most recently appeared in the short-lived Quibi series “Royalties” alongside “Glee” star Darren Criss and the uber-popular psychological thriller “You,” starring “Gossip Girl” alum Penn Badgley.
